Wild Horses of the Outer Banks NC

The Outer Banks region is one of the few places left in the US where visitors can find wild mustangs. Before humans settled the once remote area known as the Outer Banks, Spanish mustangs roamed free. As paved roads and homes started being added to the area, the horses were forced north, where we find them today. A fence has been built, from the ocean to the sound in order to keep the horses on the north side of the island, away from the dangers of traffic. Once you pass into the fenced area, only four wheel drive vehicles will make it past the beach to the area where the horses are most often spotted.
