Comment with questions you have about the Outer Banks. As a born and raised Outer Banker I'm sure I either know the answer or can find out for you!   Here are some previous questions:

    • I have a question....it may be a crazy question, but I am gonna ask anyway...lol....we were in Kitty Hawk a few weeks ago and these disks kept washing up on the beach from the ocean.....lots of them....it was like they were made out of clear silicone or something, I actually saw some in the ocean....do you know what these are?
Jennifer, That's not crazy question! Those are moon jellies. They are jellyfish but their sting doesn't usually affect humans.

    • Is there a schedule of when stores and restaurants close for the fall/winter(for all areas of OBX from Nags Head to Corolla) or does it just vary by business?
Susan, There isn't a schedule really. Most places are open through Thanksgiving at least on a partial basis. The stores in Corolla close earlier than those in Kitty Hawk-Nags Head.
Where is the best place to find shells??? I'm not looking to load up a truck with them just a large jar and hopefully some big enough to hang or put on a shelf?? Does it depend on the time of year?
Theresa , I would say that there are more shells in Corolla and in Hatteras than through Kitty Hawk, Kill Devil Hills, and Nags Head. However, I think it's more about when you go looking. There are always more shells to find during low tide and especially just after rough surf. Check out our Pinterest page for some ideas on how to display you shells! http://pinterest.com/ccvobx/
    • Robbin : Where is Lighthouse Bagels?
    •  It's in the shopping center that Food Lion is in. It is beside Tomato Patch
Liz : Is the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse haunted?
    • Liz, I have never heard that it was and have been in it many times. I did Google it and found that some people believe it is. Here is the story:http://voices.yahoo.com/a-guide-haunted-lighthouses-america-2036536.html
Carol: Where may I find a job just like yours??? Jealous!!!
Carol, I do have the best job ever :)

    • Jackie: The William Howard that purchased Ocracoke was he the same that sailed with Blackbeard?
Jackie. According to history.org, William Howard was quartermaster to Edward Teach (Blackbeard) around 1718. http://www.history.org/foundation/journal/blackbea.cfm

Robin : we are coming down the 3rd week of sept. we were there last year, same time, what else is there to do, besides the horses, we are going to be in kill devil hills we love it there just trying to find out other things we can do
Robin, I would suggest looking at this website that will tell you about thing to do during the week you visit.

    • Lorisue: this is our 4th trip to the outerbanks. Question is there a place to go clamming ? and where?do you need a permit?
    •  Lorisue, You do need a NC Fishing License to clam. The best places to go clamming are around the Oregon Inlet Bridge and in Hatteras and Ocracoke however, you can do it anywhere in the Sound. Find out more about NC Fishing License here:http://www.outerbanks.org/outerbanks-fishing-license-information/
Brittany: What is it like during hurricane season? My family and I are visiting the week of September 22nd, we've never been down later than August. What should we expect?
    • Brittany, First of all, take comfort in knowing that Sept 22nd is the tail end of our peak time for hurricanes. You probably have nothing to worry about. However, if you are here and a storm is threatening our coast, you will hear about it on the news or radio. People start preparing and discussing the "what ifs" pretty early on. The main thing to remember is to stay calm and relay on your rental company to keep you informed.
Maureen : We may be traveling to Duck during December and February. What kinds of things can you do during those times and how is the weather?
Maureen, The best part about a trip to Duck during that time is the quietness. There isn't much to do and a lot of restaurants/stores are closed. If you plan to come, be prepared to do a lot of relaxing at home! You can visit the Wright Brothers Monument, aquarium, and lighthouses. The lighthouses aren't open but you can see them. The weather is usually pleasant- low 50s, high 40s- but it can be colder.

Jennifer  Thank you so much!!! I will let my family know as well. I appreciate the information!! Kathy, I posted a link to a bridge plan from Currituck mainland to Corolla. They did build a bridge from Manns Harbor to the South end of Manteo and it was opened in 2002.

Susan: how can you stand it when the hurricanes hit the Outer Banks?
    •  Susan, It is stressful when a hurricane comes but I am so used to it after 28 years of them. We have been extremely lucky in that we haven't had a devastating storm during my lifetime. By now, I know the drill and am prepared. I always evacuate because I have 2 small children. We had a plan in place and I try not to think of the "what ifs..."
