What's So Special About Corolla?

Share

Some people might wonder: What's so special about Corolla? Well I'll tell you...

I was at the grocery store the other day, and the cashier (who I've known for years) asked me, "So, how is Corolla doing?" I replied that it is great and still as special as ever.

The person behind me in line chimed in, "What's so special about Corolla?" I paused for a moment, kind of surprised by her question and tone and replied….

There are so many special things about Corolla! Do you have a moment?

First and foremost, the people who live and/or work in Corolla are some of the most kind and friendly folks you will meet.  Everyone seems to greet you with a smile and hello - even if they have never met you before.

The history of the area, Whalehead Club, Currituck Beach Lighthouse, the old Corolla Schoolhouse and of course, the Corolla Wild Horses are all things that are special to me. Currituck County has done a wonderful job restoring the historic Whalehead Club and grounds. They even have a Wildlife Education Center on the property, which is a great facility for guests to visit!

The nonprofit group, Outer Banks Conservationists, was created to restore and preserve the Currituck Beach Lighthouse, including the surrounding Lightkeeper's residences and grounds. The old Schoolhouse was also restored and is now a K-6 accredited Charter School, Water's Edge Village School. The school has about 23 children in attendance - it's a great addition for the folks of Corolla and the people who work here.

The Corolla Wild Horse Fund was created to manage the herd and protect them for generations to enjoy. It is such a treat seeing these beautiful creatures walking along the beach and feeding on the sea oats.

And last but not least, the beaches make Corolla so special. I think we have some of the best beaches along the East Coast! Corolla's beaches are wide and flat with a great protective dune line.

I think I stunned the woman at the grocery store with my answer, and she replied, "Wow! I've got to check this place out!" My family has been coming to the Outer Banks for years and we have never ventured north of Duck!"

I told her it was worth the drive and to come to Corolla on their next visit. Hard to believe that they have been missing out on all that Corolla has to offer for so many years!åç
