Outer Banks What To Do: Visit the Wild Horses and 4X4 Beaches

Share

Visiting the Wild Horses is a must when vacationing in Corolla! There is just something so majestic about seeing horses on the beach and in the wild. To add to the excitement of seeing the horses, you must have a 4X4 vehicle. If you don't own a 4X4, you can rent a Jeep or you can go on tour. (Visit our websites for a list of options) We decided to forgo a guided tour and took our personal 4X4 vehicle to the beach. Before we got going, we made sure that we had everything we would need for the day as there are no stores on the northern beaches.  Loaded with coolers for lunch, we headed off road. We drove north for about 15 minutes before making our first stop.  We parked for our picnic lunch and a dip in the ocean.     After getting our fill of ocean swimming, it was time to make our way to the horses. We didn't have to look too long before we found a small group! *It is important to remember not to stop your vehicle or get out to try to touch the horses.                                           After the initial sighting, we decided to get off the beach and head into the communities. Driving around the community Swan Beach was so interesting. Being there was completely different than any other place I have been. Not only are there no paved roads but there are no stores and wild horses roaming around! It was surreal to see a small group of horses on one side of the road and a resident picking weeds on the other side!

It was a great experience and one that I would recommend for anyone visiting the area! If you do visit the area, be sure to email me pictures or post them to our FaceBook page!
